Retirement Planning in Keyport
We help you work out when work can become optional and how the money you have set aside becomes income you can rely on each month. The result is a written plan for income, taxes, health coverage and the policies behind it, reviewed at our office or by phone and video.
A plan for the years after the last paycheck
Saving for retirement and living on what you saved are two different problems. The first is mostly about contributions and time. The second is about sequence: which account you draw from first, when to start Social Security, how to bridge the years before Medicare, and how to keep a bad market year from forcing you to sell at the wrong moment.
Our retirement planning work starts with what you actually spend and what you want those years to look like. From there we build a year-by-year income map, test it against weaker markets and longer lifespans, and adjust it as your life changes. It suits people five to fifteen years from retiring, and it suits people who have already retired and want a clearer picture.
We also spend time on the coverage side, because a long illness or a disability can undo a careful plan. We help you read what your policies really pay and what a claim would require, without promising an outcome that belongs to the insurer.
What the work includes
Spending and income map
We separate the bills you must pay from the spending you can flex, then set your pension, Social Security, annuity payments and portfolio draws against them for each year ahead.
Social Security and pension timing
We compare the ages at which you could claim, and for married couples we run both spouses' start dates together. The survivor benefit often decides the matter, so we build it into the model rather than guess.
Withdrawal sequence and taxes
The account you draw on first can change what you owe the IRS for many years. We set an order for pulling from brokerage, pre-tax and Roth money, and bring in our Tax Management service when a Roth conversion or a required minimum distribution is part of the picture.
Health coverage before and after 65
If you stop working early, we plan how you will pay for coverage until Medicare starts, and we go over the enrollment windows so a late signup does not leave you with a permanent surcharge.
Policy and paperwork review
We read your long-term care, disability and life policies alongside the plan. We explain how a claim gets started, what documents insurers usually ask for and how to keep that folder current well before it is needed.
Portfolio built for income
Money you will spend in the next few years is kept apart from the swings of the market. For the ongoing care of the accounts themselves, see Investment Management.
Signs it is time to plan retirement properly
You have a number but no plan
Knowing your balance is a start. Knowing how much of it you can spend each year, and for how long, is the part that lets you set a date.
Your money lives in too many places
A 401(k) left behind at a former job, a rollover IRA, your spouse's workplace plan and a brokerage account can each look fine on its own statement and still pull in different directions.
A pension or Social Security decision is near
Lump sum or monthly payments, starting benefits at 62 or holding off until 70. Many of these choices cannot be undone, so they deserve a careful look first.
Your coverage is a mystery
If you could not say how your long-term care or disability policy pays out, it is worth reading it with someone before the day it matters.
A market drop made you want to sell
That reaction usually means your near-term income is sitting in the wrong place. It is a structural fix, not a nerve problem.
From first conversation to yearly check-in
- 1
A first sit-down
You tell us what you want retirement to look like, when you hope it begins and what concerns you most. By the end you will know whether we are a good fit, and there is nothing to sign.
- 2
Collecting your paperwork
Statements, benefit estimates, pension documents and insurance policies all go into one file. We give you a short list up front, so you only gather things once.
- 3
Modeling and stress-testing
We project income year by year, then push the plan through long market slumps, higher inflation and a longer life than expected. Any weak spots are shown to you plainly.
- 4
Reviewing the written plan
We go through it page by page, in person or by video. You see the tradeoffs, ask what you need to ask and make the decisions.
- 5
Yearly updates
Once a year we look again at spending, withdrawals, tax brackets and coverage, and revise the plan when the rules or your circumstances shift.
What shapes the cost of retirement planning
Before any work begins, we explain how we are paid in plain language and confirm it in writing. The biggest differences between one client and the next come from how much there is to plan. These are the details that tend to add time and care.
- How many accounts and paychecks you bring
- Someone with one workplace plan and Social Security needs less modeling than someone juggling a pension, several old employer plans, rental income and a business of their own.
Retirement planning questions
Something not covered here? (732) 655-8654
When should I start planning retirement income?
Ideally five to ten years before you stop working. That leaves time to shift contributions, consider Roth conversions and adjust the portfolio gradually. Starting later still helps; the options are simply narrower.
Can you tell me exactly how much I can safely spend?
We can give you a well-tested estimate and show how it holds up in weaker markets. No one can promise a figure, because markets and lifespans are uncertain. That is why we review the plan every year and adjust.
Will you help if I file a long-term care or disability claim?
We can help you understand what the policy covers, which records the insurer usually asks for and how to keep them organized. We are not the adjuster and cannot decide or promise the outcome. Our Life Insurance Consulting page covers how we review life policies.
I already retired. Is it too late?
No. Many of the most useful decisions, such as withdrawal order, tax brackets and required distributions, happen after retirement starts.
Can we meet without driving to an office?
Yes. Plenty of clients from Keyport, Matawan, Hazlet and the surrounding towns handle every review with us by phone or video. Others prefer sitting across the table at our office, and you can switch whenever it suits you.
